Nghiên cứu mới đây của các nhà khoa học Hà Lan về lượng vitamin B12 trong máu ở 4.000 phụ nữ đang mang thai ở 3 tháng đầu tiên và phỏng vấn họ về tình trạng của bé sau sinh cho thấy: những phụ nữ có lượng vitamin B12 cao trong giai đoạn đầu mang thai sẽ có gấp 3 cơ hội sinh ra những em bé “ngoan”. Tương tự, những phụ nữ có nồng độ vitamin B12 thấp nhất trong giai đoạn mang thai sẽ dễ sinh sinh trẻ quấy khóc ít nhất 3 tiếng mỗi ngày.

Cụ thể, 5% phụ nữ có lượng vitamin B12 thấp nhất phàn nàn rằng bé rất quấy khóc so với với 1% bà mẹ có lượng vitamin B12 cao nhất phàn nàn về cùng vấn đề.

Sự quấy khóc của trẻ cũng liên quan với các yếu tố khác như tuổi tác, hiểu biết xã hội, trình độ và thói quen hút thuốc của người mẹ.

Họ cũng không tìm thấy sự liên quan giữa folate, một dinh dưỡng thiết yếu cho sự phát triển của não bộ, với tình trạng hay khóc ở trẻ.

Vitamin B12 được cho là đóng vai trò quan trọng phát triển não bộ và hệ thần kinh của thai nhi và cũng rất thiết yếu đối với máu.

Vitamin này tìm thấy nhiều trong thịt đỏ, gà, các sản phẩm từ sữa, ngũ cốc bổ sung vi chất này, gan và các loại sò. Tuy nhiên, các chuyên gia khuyến nghị thai phụ nên tránh ăn gan, sò, trứng sống, phô-mai mềm.
