Một nghiên cứu kéo dài 3 năm với 128 bà mẹ tham gia cho thấy thai ở trong bụng mẹ càng đủ ngày đủ tháng và cho con bú càng lâu chỉ số thông minh của trẻ càng cao. Nghiên cứu do các nhà khoa học ĐH Durham thực hiện.

GS Robert Barton, Khoa Nhân loại học, cho biết: “Phát hiện của chúng tôi không đưa ra kết luận là liệu sữa công thức cho trẻ có tương đương hay tốt như sữa mẹ trong sự phát triển não bộ ở trẻ nhưng nó làm gia tăng nhiều hơn những nghi ngờ mà từ đây sẽ có thêm nhiều nghiên cứu nữa.

Mục tiêu ban đầu của nghiên cứu là tìm kiếm sự tiến hóa trước và sau sinh nhưng nhờ đó mà phát hiện ra rằng não bộ tăng trưởng liên quan với thời gian và năng lượng người mẹ đầu tư cho trẻ. Nghiên cứu bước đầu giải thích mối quan hệ mạnh mẽ giữa người mẹ sẽ giúp thai nhi phát triển và kéo dài thời kỳ thai nghén.

Các nhà khoa học cũng tỏ ra thận trọng khi nhận định rằng chúng ta cần có nhiều nghiên cứu hơn nữa để xem sự tăng trưởng trước và sau sinh ảnh hưởng tới não bộ như thế nào.
