Đôi khi sự thèm thuồng là một dấu hiệu cơ thể đang thiếu hụt chất nào đó.

TS Gibon đã tiến hành một thử nghiệm vào năm 1995 để kiểm chứng giả thiết thèm ăn món nào đó là do cơ thể thiếu hụt các chất liên quan. Một giả thiết khác là chúng ta không tiêu hóa hay hấp thụ được những thực phẩm này một cách thích đáng và kết quả là thèm chúng nhiều hơn chính nhu cầu của cơ thể. Ví dụ, bệnh nhân tiểu đường không thể điều tiết được đường huyết nên thường xuyên bị thiếu hụt năng lượng. Vì thế, nếu không kiểm soát được bệnh, họ sẽ thèm đồ ăn ngọt do cơ thể tin rằng nó không được nhận đủ.

Cá

Bạn thèm cá hồi thì hẳn là do lượng chất béo omega-3 trong cơ thể đang thiếu hụt. Một số bằng chứng mới cho thấy cơ quan thụ cảm vị giác phản ứng nhất định với các axit béo. Có thể hệ thống cơ thể ý thức được sự hiện diện của các chất này.

Thèm cá ngừ có thể là nhu cầu về muối, đặc biệt là ở những người ăn ít chất béo, ăn nhiều hoa quả và rau xanh nhưng lại ít thịt hay cá và ăn lạt. Những người ăn kiêng thường hấp thụ nhiều ka-li từ rau quả, vì thế họ có nhu cầu cân bằng chúng bằng cách bổ sung thêm muối.

Sữa

Sữa có rất nhiều dưỡng chất thiết yếu và nếu bạn thèm phô-mai thì có thể cơ thể bạn đang thiếu vitamin A & D, đặc biệt nếu chế độ ăn của bạn ít chất béo.

Thịt

Nhiều chuyên gia cho rằng thèm thịt tức là cơ thể đang cần protein.
