Mùi tất hôi có thể giúp phòng bệnh... sốt rét

(Dân trí) - Muỗi thích thứ gì hơn làn da sạch sẽ của con người? Đó là tất bẩn. Các nhà khoa học tin rằng mùi hôi chân của con người có thể sử dụng để thu hút và tiêu diệt muỗi mang mầm bệnh sốt rét chết người. Nghiên cứu này được Quỹ Gates tài trợ.

Nếu có thể sản xuất hàng loạt với giá rẻ, những cái bẫy này sẽ cung cấp một cách kiểm soát lây truyền sốt rét bên ngoài nhà đầu tiên trên thế giới. Việc sử dụng màn chống muỗi và phun thuốc chống muỗi cũng sẽ giúp giảm sự lây truyền bệnh sốt rét trong nhà.

Cách đây 15 năm, nhà khoa học Hà Lan, TS Bart Knols đã phát hiện ra rằng muỗi rất bị thu hút bởi mùi của đôi chân khi khỏa thân đứng ở trong một căn phòng tối và kiểm tra xem vị trí nào trên cơ thể bị muỗi đốt nhiều nhất. Tuy nhiên, từ đó, các nhà nghiên cứu vẫn chưa thể tìm ra cách nào sử dụng hiệu quả nghiên cứu này.

Sau đó, TS Fredros Okumu, trưởng dự án, công tác tại Viện Sức khỏe Tanzania Ifakara, phát hiện ra rằng mùi hôi chân - mà ông đã “copy” bằng cách sử dụng sự pha trộn cẩn thận của 8 hóa chất, có thể thu hút lượng muỗi nhiều gấp 4 lần và chất độc trong bẫy có thể tiêu diệt tới 95% số muỗi.

“Đây là lần đầu tiên chúng tôi tập trung vào cách kiểm soát muỗi sống ở ngoài ngôi nhà. Mục tiêu của chúng tôi là tiêu diệt sốt rét mà không cần sử dụng công nghệ mới nào”, ông Okumu, một người Kenya và đã từng bị bệnh sốt rét nhiều lần cho biết.

TS Okumu cho biết sẽ nghiên cứu nơi nào đặt bẫy diệt muỗi phù hợp nhất vì quá gần với con người sẽ làm gia tăng rủi ro và quá xa thì không hiệu quả.

Với chi phí làm bẫy hiện tại khá đắt đỏ, TS Okumu hy vọng sẽ sản xuất các bẫy giá cả phải chăng có thể được bán với giá từ 4 - 27 đô la Mỹ (khoảng 80-540 ngàn Việt nam đồng) mỗi bẫy. Ông cũng hy vọng là cứ mỗi 20 bẫy này sẽ giúp bảo vệ được khoảng 1.000 người.

Một số chuyên gia lo ngại rằng dự án này không thực tế vì thiếu vắc-xin phòng sốt rét hiệu quả và bởi vì số bệnh nhân bị kháng các loại thuốc điều trị sốt rét hiệu quả nhất đang tăng lên. Ngoài ra, mặc dù tỉ lệ sốt rét toàn cầu đang giảm nhưng vẫn còn hơn 220 triệu trường hợp mắc sốt rét mới mỗi năm. Liên hợp quốc ước tính khoảng 800.000 người đã tử vong vì sốt rét mỗi năm và phần lớn là trẻ em châu Phi.
