Trầm cảm: Bệnh tật hay cú hích?

(Dân trí) - Bên cạnh những thiệt hại kinh tế, xã hội, một cách nhìn mới chỉ ra rằng: trầm cảm là một cơ chế tiến hóa, giúp chúng ta đối phó với khủng hoảng bằng cách nhìn nhận, đánh giá lại các ưu tiên của bản thân.

Bệnh dịch của cuộc sống hiện đại?

Cứ 4 người Anh có 1 người bị trầm cảm vào 1 thời điểm nào đó trong cuộc đời. Và theo tính toán của các nhà kinh tế học, chi phí cho căn bệnh này và thiệt hại do ảnh hưởng tới năng suất là khoảng 17 tỉ bảng mỗi năm.

“Thủ phạm” được cho là từ tiền sử gia đình hay trải qua 1 chấn thương lớn, bị căng thẳng kinh niên và thường xuyên lo lắng về tiền bạc.

Nhưng giờ đây, với những bằng chứng người thật việc thật cho thấy trầm cảm có thể thay đổi cuộc sống theo hướng tích cực, giúp người từng bị trầm cảm vượt qua khó khăn, nhanh phục hồi và có nhiều sáng tạo hơn, qua điểm cũ dường như đang bị lung lay.

Hay cơ chế sinh tồn?

Một số nhà nghiên cứu cho rằng trầm cảm không hẳn là một bệnh tật trong mọi trường hợp nhưng một cơ chế sinh tồn tiến hóa đã giúp chúng ta ứng phó với khủng hoảng trong cuộc sống bằng cách buộc chúng ta phải đánh giá lại các ưu tiên.

Với ý tưởng gây tranh cãi rằng trầm cảm đôi khi tốt cho chúng ta trong dài hạn, các nhà khoa học Hà Lan đã phân tích các tác động của trầm cảm ở 165 người bằng quan sát xem họ ứng phó với căng thẳng trong cuộc sống trước và sau khi tinh thần của họ sụp đổ như thế nào.

Các nhà nghiên cứu dự kiến sẽ có kết quả là: những bệnh nhân sẽ không thể vượt qua do thiếu kinh nghiệm, vật lộn để đối phó với công việc và cuộc sống. Tuy nhiên, thực tế cho thấy phần lớn trở nên nhiều sức sống hơn, cải thiện được các mối quan hệ xã hội và làm việc hiệu quả hơn.

Lý thuyết tiến hóa này đã đặt ra một câu hỏi quan trọng: Vậy thì việc quá nhiều người trầm cảm nhẹ đến trung bình được khuyến khích nên dùng thuốc chống trầm cảm để cảm thấy tốt hơn hay việc tự đối đầu với trầm cảm và trở nên mạnh mẽ hơn mới là cái đích cuối cùng?

“Không ai muốn chọn trầm cảm bởi vì nó thực sự là một trải nghiệm khó chịu. Nhưng bạn buộc phải tự hỏi rằng tại sao nó phổ biến và tại sao nó không được lai tạo trong quá trình tiế hóa. Có lẽ bởi vì chúng ta cần một cái gì đó giúp chúng ta “phanh” lại trong mỗi thời điểm và rồi đánh giá lại mục tiêu và chiến lược của mình. Chúng ta cần được đáp ứng những nhu cầu riêng để phát triển và được yêu thương, được là một phần của xã hội.
