Vitamin C giúp giảm nguy cơ đục thủy tinh thể

(Dân trí) - Những người lớn tuổi ít ăn các thực phẩm giàu vitamin C trong chế độ dinh dưỡng hằng ngày sẽ khiến nguy cơ mắc bệnh đục thủy tinh thể tăng, một nghiên cứu tại Ấn Độ chỉ rõ.

Đục thủy tinh thể hay cườm mắt là tình trạng xuất hiện màng bao phủ thủy tinh thể do các protein kết khối, gây ra vấn đề thị lực cho người già. Một số nghiên cứu chỉ ra rằng những người ăn nhiều thực phẩm giàu chất chống ôxy hóa, gồm vitamin C, sẽ ít có nguy cơ mắc bệnh hơn.

Nhưng những nghiên cứu này là do các nước châu Âu thực hiện, không phù hợp với các nước có thu nhập thấp như Ấn Độ, nơi lượng vitamin C trong cơ thể có xu hướng rất thấp và tỉ lệ đục thủy tinh thể đặc biệt cao.

Trong nghiên cứu mới nhất, các nhà nghiên cứu Ấn Độ đã kiểm tra mắt của 5.600 người già trên 60 tuổi và có nguy cơ bị đục thủy tinh thể. Họ cũng phỏng vấn những người này về chế độ ăn, thói quen sống và đo lượng vitamin C trong máu.

Kết quả cho thấy gần 73% đối tượng tham gia nghiên cứu bị đục thủy tinh thể và tỉ lệ thuận với lượng vitamin C trong máu cũng như nạp vào hằng ngày. Cụ thể, 1/4 người già có lượng vitamin C cao nhất (38micromole/l), nguy cơ đục thủy tinh thể thấp hơn 39% so những người ăn thực phẩm có vitamin C ít nhất. Các yếu tố như thu nhập, thói quen hút thuốc, huyết áp cao và tiểu đường cũng được tính tới.

Lượng vitamin C chuẩn trong máu là từ 11micromole/l máu. Dưới mức này bị coi là thiếu vitamin C.

Theo khuyến nghị của các chuyên gia, dùng vitamin C bổ sung sẽ không thể thay thế một chế độ dinh dưỡng hợp lý với nhiều thực phẩm giàu vitamin C như cam, bưởi, ớt chuông xanh và đỏ, kiwi, các loại dâu, súp lơ xanh và cà chua.
